The inland waters of Sri Lanka play a major role in our economy in irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, inland fisheries, etc. Unfortunately this important resource is now under stress due to various aspects including natural and anthropogenic. Due to intense human interferences in the catchments the deterioration of water quality and quantity is a common problem in Sri Lanka. In addition climatic changes are also likely to affect our water systems negatively. Therefore the proposed symposium is designed to provide the participants with knowledge to understand the existing problems of various inland aquatic systems and then to establish appropriate management strategies. Topics covered will include: Ancient irrigation systems of Sri Lanka, recent irrigation systems of Sri Lanka, optimum benefits of inland water resources, physicochemical and biological characteristics of the reservoirs and streams in Sri Lanka, aspects of water pollution, health and social problems associated with water pollution and importance of water as a global resource, need for water management, methods of water management, practical side of establishing appropriate water management strategies. Target Group: Scientific community involved in reservoir/water based work. Duration: 2 days Registration Fee: Rs. 500 /= (includes proceedings, lunch, tea and refreshments) For postgraduate/undergraduate students - Rs. 250/- Symposium Coordinatorrs Dr. Sudharma Yatigammana, Department of Zoology, University of Peradeniya, Peradeniya Phone: 0812394479, 0715328086 E-mail: sudharma_y@yahoo.com Dr. S.
