Jointly organized by the BOARD OF STUDY IN ZOOLOGICAL SCIENCES and ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE POSTGRADUATE INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE (PGIS), UNIVERSITY OF PERADENIYA, SRI LANKA in collaboration with the TOYAMA PREFECTURAL UNIVERSITY, JAPAN
The purpose of the symposium is to provide a forum for analytical and solution-based discussions and to disseminate knowledge and exchange information regarding research activities and plans for studying the relationship between water resources, environmental and anthropogenic activities with special emphasis on water pollution and effects on human health in Sri Lanka. Participants will include scientists, engineers, managers, legislators, NGO representatives and policy makers involved in water, environment and water related health issues. Inland waters of Sri Lanka play a major role in our economy by providing water for irrigation, power generation, inland fisheries, and more importantly, by supplying drinking water to all communities. Therefore, the assurance of the health of water has become an important task. Unfortunately, many of the water bodies in Sri Lanka are now under stress due to various threats from natural and anthropogenic sources. Hence the main objective of the symposium is to understand the current conditions of surface water and groundwater in Sri Lanka with special emphasis on Dry Zone reservoirs. This symposium will also be a platform for creating partnerships in solving water pollution problems, environmental degradation and health risks affecting different communities in different regions of the country. The symposium will facilitate the sharing of experience of well known scholars and young scientists through presentations of scientific and technical papers and posters on research, planning research and developmental activities Topics to be covered
